The building from which this design originated was built in the mid-19th century on the site of the infamous Marshalsea Prison. This is the oldest of four layers of wallpaper glued together. The Gothic grid pattern with Moorish influences was the first wallpaper to adorn the walls of one of the buildings built in the late 1870s to replace the prison.
